Happy New Year!

I recently moved my website to a new hosting company due to the previous one shutting down. I always forget how much work it is to get a website moved to a new host.

I decided to change my website layout, but still use the same background picture that I did with the last one, since I still really like it. I think I have finally finished making changes to it and hopefully everything is now working. I worked on updating and fixing all the pages including the Alberta Events sections of the website.

I have also started adding events that are coming up in 2022. I’m really hoping that Covid settles down soon so I can start going out and exploring again soon, but I am highly doubtful.

Since my last blog post we have gone through a few life events. At the end of August we drove out to Elliott’s grandparent’s cottage in B.C. We hadn’t done a long drive like that since he was 7 months old, and at that time, the drive was kind of a nightmare. We were pretty nervous about how he would do this time with the 10 hour drive. But it went much better than before. We enjoyed spending a week with family.

At the end of September a child at my son’s day home tested positive for Covid which resulted in our family also needing to be tested. Unfortunately, my son also tested positive although he did not show any symptoms.

Since we had to stay home and isolate for 14 days and no one actually felt ill, we used this time to start potty training. Progress started slow and I wanted to give up after the first couple days, but now 3 months later things are much better. He sometimes fights me when I tell him it’s time to go potty, but once he’s there he usually is fine. He does a lot better at the day home with potty training since a couple of the other kids also started around the same time. The last few weeks he’s actually started telling us that he has to go instead of just going in his pants because he doesn’t want to stop playing.

Another recent development has been a sleep regression. It started with my son asking us to keep the door open when he went to bed. Then he learned how to climb out of his crib and come into my room to wake me up. So we moved him to his big bed, which he had already been using for naps. But when he wakes up, he still will come into my room and wake me up. He used to sleep until 6:30 or 7am but since this new sleep development he has been coming in around 5 or 5:30am. This has been going on for about 2 weeks now. Needless to say, I am pretty tired.

This sleep problem also happened to start right before Christmas break, a few days before we had guests arriving. That added extra stress to my Christmas holiday. Thankfully, our guests were already used to waking up early.

This was the first year we actually had visitors for Christmas so it was nice to have family around again. The same grandparents that we went to visit in the summer drove out to spend a few days with us before driving back home. They almost couldn’t make it because of the flooding in B.C. which destroyed the road they would usually take, but they found another route.

I’m looking forward to beginning a new year, and I’m really hoping things can start going back to normal. I know we will have a lot more changes happening this year and I am excited to share all the details with you.

  1. Aw sorry to hear he tested positive, but glad you all didn’t get ill.

I remember my mom hating dealing with bedtime with me. XD I was horrible at going to bed. I never wanted to. Hopefully he’ll let you get more sleep eventually.

  2. I’m sorry to hear Elliot tested positive for Covid, but glad to hear he remained asymptomatic and that no one fell ill. It’s scary knowing someone you know tests positive, never mind a close family member or child.

My brother had major bedtime issues. I was older, in my teens and I remember mom reading all the books she could get her hands on and trying recommended technique after technique. I had a friend who had a sibling about the same ago (toddler) and they kept working for her while nothing worked for us. It’s so tiring. I still vividly remember some of the sleepless nights because he always wanted sissy and no matter how hard they tried they could not break him of waking me in the middle of the night or crawling into my bed (and then peeing on my back lol). Thankfully it was a stage he eventually grew out of and I’m not sure any real technique worked and it was just more him growing up and being more secure in his room at night on his own.

I’m glad to hear the grandparents got back to BC okay. I have two uncles there, one’s a trucker and the other a dispatcher for a trucking company and they said it was really bad one was off work a little while and the other was stranded.

  3. Hi Deanna, good to see you write again. The layout you are using now is actually made my the son of a friend of mine in Sweden!
Potty training can be so hard! I remember doing it when I was an au-pair and the little girl I looked after got chickenpox and couldn’t wear nappies most of the time. It was, eh, interesting. But we managed in the end as I remember it.
So happy that you didn’t get anything worse with Covid! I’ve had several friends having it lately, some very mild, another worse but nothing that required hospital care. I’m very worried about it still. But everything has been reopened fully with no restrictions here. We’ll see how it goes.
I hope the beginning of the year has been good for you.
