Clothes for Donation

Every year I try to go through my closet and weed out the clothes that I no longer wear. Last year I heard a great idea which I am doing for the second year in a row. They said to turn all of your hangers around so they are facing the opposite way. As as you wear your clothes throughout the year, you put them back the right way. That way you can see what clothes you actually wear. At the end of the year it will be easy to see what clothes you wore and which ones you haven’t.

I was able to fill a whole garbage bag with clothes I haven’t touched over the last year. There were a few articles of clothing that I didn’t wear but I’m still keeping. They were mostly dress clothes that I only wear on special occasions (not too many of them this year) or clothes that I have special memories with. And that’s okay. You don’t need to get rid of everything just because you didn’t wear them. But just make sure you don’t keep everything!

I told my boyfriend about my system and asked if he had any clothes to get rid of, and he said no. He says he doesn’t throw out any of clothes because he wants to keep them for his children. He says than when his kids are older, they will think his clothes are cool and will want to wear them too. While it’s a cool idea, I can’t imagine having my clothes sitting in my closet for 20 years waiting for the day when my child may or may not want to wear them.

What is your opinion about getting rid of things you don’t use? Do you hold onto things forever, or do you like to clear out the clutter?

  1. It’s a great system, and I feel personally that sometimes it can be better to pass along anything that you are not using all the time. If someone else can have some use and possibly like the clothing, that would be great. 😀

I used to keep so many clothes and items, but now I mostly keep the ones I wear or have special meaning. (I obviously can’t get rid of my Hogwarts robes hahaha).
