December in Pictures

In December I ran around the city trying to find the indoor Santa Claus parade. I managed to find it near the end of the parade but that was okay. It wasn’t as exciting as I thought it was going to be. I learned that my hair actually can be curled! Ever since prom I was convinced that my hair would never be able to be curly because they tried so hard to curl it for prom and it just did not work. But then one day before Christmas as I was shopping this girl at a stand selling...

Slow Cooker Lasagna

Slow Cooker Lasagna

I got this recipe from Allrecipes.com We recently bought a slow cooker but don’t have any recipes to make in it so when I found this one I was excited. We wanted to make something other than chili which I think is probably the most common use for a slow cooker. I was happy with the results of this one. Slow Cooker Lasagna Ingredients 1 pound lean ground beef 1 onion, chopped 2 teaspoons minced garlic 1 (29 ounce) can tomato sauce 1 (6 ounce) can tomato paste 1 1/2 teaspoons salt 1 teaspoon dried oregano 1 (12 ounce)...

Beef and Vegetable Pie

I got this recipe from a cook book called “Company’s Coming: Ground beef recipes” by Jean Pare. I’ve been wanting to make a meat pie for a while and this recipe did not disappoint. This book did not have a recipe for the pie dough so I got that from another book called “365 Dish a Day: A recipe for each of the 365 days in a year”. The pie dough turned out perfect. I think it was the best pie dough I have made yet! Pie Dough Ingredients 3 cups all-purpose flour, plus extra for dusting pinch of...

November in Pictures

We started off November with going to the Farm Fair where I got my first look at an Alpaca. I also sat in on a lesson about how to train a horse which was actually really interesting. I have been to events like this in Nova Scotia but out here in Alberta it was geared a lot more towards real cowboys. A lot of the stuff that was being sold would be things you actually need on a farm. Next we took a trip through the mountains where I saw more wildlife that I had never seen before in...

Mountain Trip

We had a great trip through the Rocky Mountains last weekend. My boyfriend was disappointed because a lot of the mountains were hidden due to clouds and snow, but since I didn’t know what I was missing, I had a wonderful time . We left Edmonton at 8am and arrived at the Whistlers Inn in Jasper around lunch time. Along the way we saw some wildlife including Big Horned Sheep and Elk, both of which I had never seen before. Check in at the hotel wasn’t until 3pm so we went to Earls (for the first time) to eat...

September in Pictures

The beginning of September saw my move to Alberta. I had a beautiful day for flying and was even able to see Canada’s Wonderland and the CN Tower from the airplane! When I arrived in Edmonton I saw my first magpie and a lot of Canada Geese. As I mentioned before, I spent a couple days exploring West Edmonton Mall. There was even a skate park in the bottom of the West 49 store! We ended the month off exploring a couple of local destinations during Free Admission Day. To see more pictures click here.

August in Pictures

I start off with a few more pictures from our camping trip and some Buskers. August was also the month when we packed up our things to be shipped out to Alberta. Because we had everything packed, we went out to eat a few times. At one restaurant I took Winston’s picture but then the owner of the restaurant ran over saying “I wasn’t ready!” and got in the picture with him haha. I got to spend some time hanging out with my nephews and my parents. One day I went to a Springhill Coal Mine with my parents...

Peggy’s Cove

On Monday we were experiencing the tail end of Hurricane Irene here in Nova Scotia. What do Nova Scotians do when it’s windy out? Head out to Peggy’s Cove to look at the waves. Peggy’s Cove is probably the biggest tourist attraction we have here in Nova Scotia, and if you ever come to visit you should really check it out. I really shows the power of the Atlantic Ocean. The landscape here is so different from the rest of Nova Scotia and the waves can get pretty huge. One thing to remember if you do visit, make sure...

July in Pictures

July was a busy month, as it usually is. July in Canada starts off with Canada Day which was beautiful again this year. Thanks to the nice weather we spent a lot of time walking around the city. I got to spend some time with my family at the summer home for a weekend which included boat rides, fishing, a birthday party and the beach. We discovered new treasures on the Halifax waterfront including a local celebrity and a dessert restaurant. And we ended the month off with a camping trip to celebrate our 8th anniversary as a couple....

Canada Day

Canada Day

Canada Day was on July 1st. It was a beautiful day. One of the hottest we’ve had all summer. I started my day off with watching the Tattoo Parade which I try to do every year. After lunch I went out to the commons to enjoy some activities with my nephews. Unfortunately my oldest nephew fell and hit his head pretty hard and didn’t want to do much afterwards. The one thing he did want to do was go on the bouncy castle but the line was huge so he didn’t even get to do that. I felt bad...

June in Pictures

I planted a seed from an apple. It has been growing pretty good. It came up really fast too! I always dreamed of having an apple tree in my yard and being able to eat the apples. But that will have to wait until I have a yard to plant it in. So for now I will just dream. We did a lot of walking around Halifax since the weather was so nice. I like to act like a tourist sometimes and take pictures of my beautiful city. We visited Public Gardens as well as the Old Burying Ground....

May in Pictures

Let me start off by saying sorry for not posting last month. I was either busy doing other stuff or just had nothing to say. As for the month of May, it involved a lot of plants. I bought a strawberry plant for my boyfriend, an aloe plant for myself, and a space plant. They were all started using seeds. I also planted an apple tree later because I’ve always wanted an apple tree. So far only the strawberry plant and the aloe plant has started sprouting. Hopefully the other ones will grow too. May was also the month...

Picture One: Around the city there are these painted boxes everywhere. I think they are beautiful and will often take a picture of them. I would love to be able to take a picture of every single one but that would be impossible (or at least very difficult). Pictures Two and Three: There is a shop just up the road from our apartment that sells Roti. We never had Roti before. During Christmas someone told me that it was delicious and that we should try it sometime so we finally visited the restaurant for the first time after living...

March in Pictures

This month I didn’t take a whole lot of pictures. There wasn’t really much going on. At the beginning of the month there was a sale on at Staples and my boyfriend bought a projector which was something that he had been talking about wanting for a while. I decided to try it out by playing the Sims 3 haha. It was a little too big for it to be any fun but the projector is great for watching TV! We started trying out some new recipes this month which I will post for you to try out yourself....

February included lots of snow which resulted in a bunch of days off from work. The Canada Winter Games took place this month and I was able to go watch some of the Speed Skating competitions. The Museum of Natural History also has a T-rex replica on display so we went to check that out and look at the regular exhibts too. My boyfriend was kind enough to give me some beautiful flowers for Valentine’s Day, which are surprisingly still alive. As part of the Canada Games they also held free concerts almost every night just down the road...

So Far So Good

How is the New Year treating you so far? For me it’s been good. On New Years eve we threw a party at the apartment. Counting my boyfriend and myself we had 13 people in here which we didn’t think was possible. The next morning was a bit rough but once I got the sickness out of the way we spent a few hours playing the New Super Mario Bros. for the Wii with a couple that spent the night. The next day I was hoping to go skating on the Canada Games Oval but unfortunately my boyfriend badly...

Shortbread Cookies

A few people were asking for the recipe for the Shortbread cookies that I talked about on my last blog post. When I made them I took pictures along the way because I thought about adding the recipe on my website. So here you go! I got the recipe from AllRecipes.com and I cut the recipe in half after reading some of the comments below the recipe. I also used margarine instead of butter. Ingredients 1 cup butter, softened 1/2 cup white sugar 1 tsp vanilla extract 2 cup flour Directions 1. Preheat oven to 350F. 2. Cream butter...

Christmas is Coming

Christmas is Coming

You can really tell that Christmas is coming. Trees and Christmas lights have started popping up everywhere. Trees are outside of the grocery store, in the lobby of my apartment building, in Santa’s wordshop at the mall, and I even saw a few of them at the casino last night. I recently made some shortbread cookies in the shape of candycanes. It was my first time making them. I wanted to test it out because I plan to make some more to give away as Christmas gifts, except this time I will put some icing on them. Last weekend...

Parade of Lights

The day started off like a perfect day for a holiday parade. We had our first bit of flurries (that I saw) which I found fitting for Christmas. When we headed out for the parade it didn’t feel that cold out which I was excited about because I hate being cold. We left early because we had planned on going to Dairy Queen to get some blizzards since I had a coupon, but once we got there we found out it was closed. So we ended up getting to the parade earlier than we had planned, but we found...

Canstruction

Canstruction is an event that is held every year by Feed Nova Scotia. Teams of people build structures using cans of food. It’s pretty neat to see the way they use different colored cans to make colorful structures. When the event is over, the cans of food that was used to make the structures are given to food banks and meal programs throughout the province. Here are some pictures of my favorite ones from this year.

Nocturne Update

As I had mentioned, Halifax had it’s Nocturne festival on Saturday. We were lucky enough to have it not rain on us which was wonderful. The first event we went to was called Huffing and Puffing. We were actually trying to get to the Circus Spectacular which I talked a little bit about in my last post. We only ended up at the Huffing and Puffing one because they were in the same building. What it was, was a video of a guy blowing up a balloon. He blows it up until it breaks in his face. And then...

Wishlist

I’ve recently discovered Kaboodle.com which in turn has caused me to start looking online for cute things to add to my wishlist. My list is small so far, but adorable. I’ve been tempted to actually buy some of the items but they aren’t really things I need so I’ve been having trouble justifying to myself why I should spend money on them. I am thinking that I will give my wishlist to family and friends for Christmas gift ideas. Even if they don’t buy things on my list, they will have an idea of the kind of things I...
